Is Turkey expensive?

In our experience, people find Turkey to be a very affordable country, with Taxi rides around Istanbul costing less than $5 and a nice meal for one being around $10. Determining if Turkey is an expensive country to visit will naturally depend on where you are traveling from. North American, Australian, and European tourists will find Turkey to be a very affordable country. Turkey uses its own currency, the Turkish lira, which historically is valued beneath the USD or Euro(currently at about 28 Lira to $1 USD). All major credit cards are accepted. Tourists from America or countries in Europe will get the most for their dollar while visiting Turkey. All major credit cards are accepted.

Is Turkey Safe?

We were just in Turkey in November of 2023 and found it as lovely as ever. With our extensive network of friends and local guides, we have an intimate knowledge of the country and are able to provide real information about how global events impact Turkey. Most regions in Turkey are safe and tourist-friendly; we have had people travel close to the Syrian border with no issue at all. Beyond national concern, Turkey is one of the friendliest and most welcoming countries in the world, with locals more than happy to share their stories, provide information, or offer you a cup of tea. Like any major city that caters to tourists, pickpockets and theft are present, so we do our best to remind travelers when to watch their belongings. Turkey thrives on tourism and likes to ensure that guests are taken care of.

Who is the trip for?

The trip is designed for people of all ages, fitness abilities, travel experiences, and those who want adventure and relaxation. We have traveled with infants and people in their 90s. Some degree of mobility is required for the trip as many historical sites and locations are not ADA-compliant or handicap accessible.

I’m an introvert, is this trip for me?

Tours are a great opportunity for self-reflection. Unique daily activities are scheduled for the group ensuring you will experience Turkey to the fullest, but there is no pressure to participate in anything, along with plenty of time to experience Turkey on your own. We find that touring in a group works well for introverts as it provides support without having to extend yourself.

My Family is traveling, is this trip Kid-friendly?

We set up all our tours to appeal to a wide age range of travelers. This tour is full of history from the Trojan War to Alexander the Great, along with adventures like snorkeling, sea kayaking, biking, and more. Being in another country can be an adventure in itself, and experiencing new foods and cultures can be daunting for kids. We take care to ensure our younger travelers are fulfilled and taken care of. As parents ourselves, we have made this trip with our children, they had a blast, and we had a great time sharing this adventure with them.

I’m traveling alone, will I meet people?

Sharing life-changing experiences is a great way to meet people. In our experience, our tours usually involve at least 60% of people who are traveling alone. Commoradery comes naturally on tour, but people tend to respect personal discovery if you are a lone traveler and desire space.

I’m a woman. Is there any concern about me traveling to Turkey?

Traveling solo as a woman in Turkey is generally safe, and with a group, it is very safe. A few cultural details are good to understand, like wearing headscarves in religious places. Large cities like Istanbul, Izmir, and Bodrum are hubs for international travelers and are welcoming to all foreign visitors. However, like many global countries, Turkey demands a certain level of consciousness and alertness, especially at night. Always be aware of your surroundings, maintain personal boundaries, and avoid secluded areas. We have had zero issues with female travelers on our trips.

I’ve never been on a tour before, is this for me?

Our tours are unique in that we mix intimate and unique experiences only accessible through years of friendship with residents of Turkey. Our tours feel more like a personal trip through a country with friends. We limit capacity and curate the travelers to ensure a cohesive experience. We also understand that people recharge in different ways, so we provide a balance of structured events and programs mixed with ample free time to explore Turkey in your own way. I have never heard anybody regretting going on one of our tours; in fact, we usually hear praise about the experience and the magical group of people we have put together. Our tours have led to marriages, life-long friendships, and a bond shared by all.

What should I wear on the trip?

What is acceptable dress-wise depends very much on which part of the country you are in, or even which part of a city you visit. In Istanbul and along the Mediterranean coast, Turkish people are more accustomed to a Western or European style of dress. In the eastern part of the country, you'll find the dress more reserved and formal than that of their western counterparts. We recommend dressing more formally when traveling there, with shoulders and knees covered, a higher neckline (minimal cleavage, please), no transparent clothes, or extremely form-hugging clothing. We will see people from all over the world dressed in all sorts of clothes, but we find if we show respect, we get more respect in return. Female travelers do not need to cover their hair unless visiting a mosque. Beachwear should be confined to the beach; wearing bathing suits or strolling shirtless around resort streets can be offensive (though plenty of foreign men do it). Revealing clothing like miniskirts and skimpy shorts should be avoided away from heavily touristed areas. We’ll send out a full packing list before the trip covering everything from basics to hiking clothes.

Is Turkey a Muslim country?

Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, but the country does not follow Islamic law. It is officially a secular country with roots in the Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Byzantine, and Christian faiths. Turks pride themselves on being Turkish, and along with that identity comes respect for the world’s religions. Turkey is one of the only countries where you will find Christian iconography along with Muslim symbology in mosques. It also has a long history of religious tolerance. We have traveled with people from varying faiths and have gotten feedback that Turkey is the most welcoming country for people of all faiths. We will visit religious, spiritual, and cultural places that require respect and proper dress; we will cover this in more detail as the trip approaches.
